If you plan to start a business in Georgetown/Scott County, completing the following steps will help you meet local, state and federal requirements.
You can also receive assistance creating a small business with the Kentucky Small Business Development Center.
1. Check your business name and register with the state.
Most businesses must be registered with the Commonwealth before registering with the Georgetown/Scott County Revenue Commission. (If you are a sole proprietor this step is optional). You can skip it but you must still register with the Georgetown/Scott County Revenue Commission (GSCRC).
First, check that the legal name of your business entity is available.
Kentucky has a One Stop Business Portal that will walk you through the registration process online.
This process will:
- Register your business with the Kentucky Department of Revenue
- Help you meet state tax requirements
- It takes about an hour
After completing the online registration at the One Stop Business Portal, you will have an official business name. Use this name when you register for an occupational license by completing the GSCRC Business Registration Form/Questionnaire for Occupational License, Form BQ100.
2. Apply with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN)
The process is free and takes about 15 minutes.
Once you have an EIN, you will include it when you register for an occupational license by completing the GSCRC Business Registration Form/Questionnaire for Occupational License.
Apply for federal EIN
3. Apply for a GSCRC Business License (Occupational License)
Once you have registered your business name with the state, have a federal EIN, you are ready to register with the GSCRC to obtain an occupational license by completing the GSCRC BQ100 Business Registration Form/BQ100 Questionnaire for Occupational License.
SUBMITTING YOUR GSCRC QUESTIONNAIRE, Form BQ100.
